Coppola’s Somewhere is Something Special

Once in a while a film comes along that oozes cool.  Somewhere, Sofia Coppola’s latest, is just that.  I was lucky enough to catch a screening last night, and while I must admit the story itself was not ground-breaking, this film is special.  The return-of-the-Dorff hype is well-deserved, as he somehow manages to get you to sympathize with his character, despite being a hard-partying, apathetic, and sleazy LA movie star whose home base is the Chateau Marmont.  Not to mention he’s an estranged father to his 11-year-old, self sufficient daughter played by the lovely Elle Fanning.  I was most impressed with Coppola’s patience and honesty telling this story – nothing felt rushed or oversimplified.  The soundtrack by Thomas Mars was also a perfect compliment to the story.  Maybe LA is cool, after all.  Nah.

REISS introduces ‘Elements’ campaign film in collaboration with Jamie Morgan

For the September 1st launch of the AW10 collection, notable British fashion brand REISS has collaborated with renowned photographer and filmmaker, Jamie Morgan, to create an artistic short film called “Elements” that highlights the feel and aesthetic of the upcoming men’s and women’s collections. “This season is a step forward for Reiss with a collection we are really excited about. Showing our key products in this new and innovative way felt right for where we are going, as a way of capturing all the energy and excitement that is apparent throughout every aspect of our brand. And generally, if we’re this excited about it, I’m confident that our customers will be too.” – David Reiss

The creative inspiration came as the result of an artistic collaboration with Jamie Morgan, who founded London’s creative collective ‘Buffalo’ in the 1980’s. Models brave the weather elements – rain, wind, snow protected only by a sleek modernist REISS wardrobe. “Elements” is a fantastical, dark, sexy celebration of the seasonal changes that take us in to Autumn/Winter. One Day…

It’s been raining in NYC for the past three days, and I couldn’t be happier.  Finally, we have some relief from this scorching summer and time to curl up with a good book.  Last night I finished reading the best-selling novel One Day by David Nicholls (Starter for 10), which was acquired by Random House Films and Focus Features and is currently being filmed in the UK, Scotland and France.  It stars Anne Hathaway (who I swear was born for this role) and Jim Sturgess (heaven) and is directed by Lone Scherfig (An Education).  The film follows a young couple (Hathaway and Sturgess) who meet for the first time at their graduation, then meet one day a year during the next 20 years.  To say I’m excited for this film’s release, which is likely fall 2011, would be a severe understatement.  The novel is a two-day read and is smart, sexy and sweet.  Rainy days aren’t so bad, after all.

Calling all readers!! We need your voice!

Starworks Group was recently nominated for the 14th Annual Webby Awards for its online original content called Mnemosyne, and we need your votes for the People’s Voice award. Co-Directors Daphne Guinness and David Parker created the video alongside the launch of Guinness’s new scent, DAPHNE, for Comme des Garcons.

“Scent is directly related to memory,” Daphne explains about the film’s narrative. “It is something of a sensory path, evoking snapshots of one’s past as you smell it. It has the power to transport you from the room in which you stand, to a place buried within the depths of your memory. I wanted to illustrate that scent can take you on a journey.”
